An organic garden in Philly

Why having a vegetable garden is a good idea.

There are many reasons why having a vegetable garden is a good idea… heck, it’s a great idea. Here are the reasons why:

You’ll save lots of money growing your own vegetables.
Well maybe not, but the tomatoes you grown in your own back yard are the juiciest, most flavorful fruits you will ever eat.

It looks pretty.
Even when you fall behind on weeding, the sunflowers you planted are the prettiest flowers you will ever pick. You won’t even get mad when the squirrels eat all the seeds because you will be enchanted by his ritual of sneaking over the fence and scurrying up the stalk.

You’ll save time going to the grocery store.
Probably not! But the time you spend in the garden is more beneficial than you can imagine.

You have permission to get dirty.
And let’s be honest, who doesn’t like playing in the dirt. And if you don’t like dirt, you can always wear gloves.

You’ll find solitude.
Not the kind you are thinking of because the buzz of the insects and the songs of the birds are some of the loudest sounds you will ever hear.

You’ll create a little piece of heaven
If you don’t do it for yourself then do it for the honey bees and the monarch butterflies.

The time you spend with your kids will be just like family movie night.
Not a chance. Stories created in the garden become memories shared with friends.

The benefits of gardening are numerous. Spending 20 minutes a day in sunlight gives you a healthy dose of vitamin D. Having a connection with your food, especially for children, can change the way we eat. Children are much more likely to eat something they grew from a seed, watered and nurtured. You will become more connected to your environment, the nature around you. Is it time to water? Is the lettuce getting enough shade? You can unplug for as little as 15 minutes a day to spend time in the garden.

Lil Red Go-for has been installing organic vegetable gardens in the Flemington area for 5 summers. We can rototill, set you garden up, help you plant and give you “garden support” for the season. We offer garden starter packages for small gardens or are available to help you expand your existing garden. We can help you with your spring, summer and fall needs; spring rototilling, summer tips for the garden, fall plantings, protect your garden from the harsh winters with cover crop plantings.

Join Lil Red Gofor for a free information session about organic vegetable gardening, where to start, what to plant, how to weed, using companion plants to attract beneficial insects
